2023 Riding for the Brand Competition

Qualifying Tests October 12-14, 2023
Championship Saturday Evening October 14, 2023

Riding for the Brand was an unwritten code of the Old West but understood by everyone who agreed to live the cowboy life on the open range — that the cowboy should always “ride for the brand.”  In the early days of the American West, a brand was a ranch’s trademark.  It meant protecting the ranch and its livestock, whatever it took.  The brand also represented pride, duty, stewardship, loyalty and dedication.

Perhaps a few lines of a cowboy poem say it best:
“Ridin’ for the brand means to help neighbors and friends; Search for that one last stray,
Even though you’re tired and it’s the end of the day.  It’s just not the cowboy way to quit.”
Cowboy Dressage reflects those principles of being moral, just, fair and dedicated.

*New Vaquero Buckaroo Division for Gathering and Finals 2023

New name Vaquero Buckaroo (VB): VB exhibitors can now ride in all of the following tests: WJ, WJL, Challenge WJ and Challenge WJL.  Exhibitors must declare on entries (by class number) if they are riding as a VB or Regular Test.  Exhibitors cannot ride one test and enter as both VB and Regular Test.  A separate test for each division must be ridden.  To be recognized as VB, exhibitors must have in tack or clothing 3 of the following when competing: Rawhide or rope Riata, hobbles, rein chains, quirt, leather cuffs, gauntlets gloves, hackamore with Fiador, tapaderos, mohair, cotton or horsehair girths, serape tied across back of saddle, chinks or chaps, and get down rope.  As rider rides to judge’s stand before entering the test they stop and acknowledge their 3 items.  Spade bits are not mandatory in the two rein or in the bridle. CDW bit rules apply.  Two hands cannot be used except in the hackamore or snaffle.
